About Marunouchi - the Prime Business Area of Tokyo

Marunouchi has functioned as a prime area of the Japanese economy for the past 100 years. Led by Mitsubishi Estate and the local community, it has turned into a vibrant and attractive town that offers much more than just office spaces.

Marunouchi has an area of 120 ha. It is situated between the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Station. There are nearly 100 buildings, with 1/3 owned and managed by Mitsubishi Estate.

Having an office in Marunouchi means you are one of the top players in your industry.

The over 4,000 companies account for around 10% of all those listed in the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and employ about 240,000 people. The revenues of the companies with headquarters in Marunouchi account for up to 25% of the GDP.

Proximity to the centers of the government, finance and commerce, Marunouchifs traffic network has 13 railway lines and 7 subway lines. The entire area benefits from an underground pedestrian network.

The streets of what is now Marunouchi were once the residential area of feudal lordsf quarter that protected the Edo Castle.

Marunouchi means ginside the circleh which meant it was an area ginsideh the Edo Castle. Upon the Meiji Restoration starting in 1868, Edo Castle became the Imperial Palace. The Meiji Government decided to sell the land which was once the feudal lordsf residential area to the private sector. Mitsubishi bought the entire land and since then the Marunouchi area has developed into a center of Business in Japan.
